Optically, physically, chemically and thermally the same as mined diamonds -- at a surprisingly affordable price.
For 4,000 years diamonds came from one place: the ground.
Since 1958 it's been possible to grow them in a lab, but the quality wasn't good enough for use in jewelry. That changed about 10 years ago when technology advanced to the point where we're able to create real diamonds for far less than on the cost of digging them out of the earth.
Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. Even a jeweler with a 10x loupe can't tell the difference. (You need special equipment designed to detect the presence of the 415 nm optical absorption line.)
We're now able to offer lab-grown white diamonds at around 1/3 the price of mined. And we're able to offer exceptionally rare color diamonds at a fraction the price of those found underground.
Just1 in 10,000 mined diamonds has color, and many of those are a somewhat unappealing yellowish brown. But once in a great while the mines reveal a blue, pink, yellow, orange, brown, or red diamond. Given their extreme rarity, these gems are very expensive, and price goes up exponentially with size. A mined Fancy Intense Blue could easily sell for $1 million/carat. Consequently it's no surprise that few people have ever seen a blue diamond, much less owned one.
It's possible to create color artificially using annealing or other treatments. But that produces a pastel color that lacks the depth and complexity of a mined colored diamond.
At Calia, our blue, yellow, and orange diamonds are "as-grown", and replicate the process found in nature. To create the blues, boron gas is introduced during the growth phase. Most of the time that makes the diamond whiter. But sometimes, rarely, for reasons we don't understand and can't control, it turns the diamond blue.
And we can make these exceptionally rare diamonds available to you for about 3% of the cost of the mined equivalent.
All of our jewelry is handmade to exacting standards at our workshop in Tokyo. We offer a wide range of designs, and specialize in custom orders that highlight the beauty of your lab-grown diamond.

Calia Next Generation Diamond Jewelry was created by David W. Rudlin, a 20-year veteran of the diamond industry who spent a decade with De Beers as Director of International Markets and President of Japan.
He started the company to answer the question "What can we do now that we couldn't do before?" That led to a focus on color diamonds, particularly blues, and an emphasis on diamond-intensive designs that maximize the cost advantages of next generation diamonds.
